Built around AD 1100, Abernethy’s tower is one of only two Irish-style round towers in Scotland.

Abernethy’s 22-metre round tower is believed to have been built around AD 1100. It is one of only two Irish-style round towers in Scotland—the other stands at Brechin—and nobody knows for certain how this remarkable design arrived in Perthshire.
The tower has served as a bell tower and as a secure refuge for local people and their possessions. It still functions as a bell tower today.
