Local Fact of the Day: Elcho’s castle-to-mansion story 🏰
Built around 1560, Elcho Castle shows the moment Scottish tower houses began becoming more comfortable country mansions.

Elcho Castle, near Perth, is one of Scotland’s best-preserved 16th-century tower houses. Built by the Wemyss family around 1560, it marks a shift from defensive castle to comfortable country mansion—with privacy for its noble residents behind that formidable stone exterior.
It has changed remarkably little since it was built. Historic Environment Scotland records only a new roof and new window glazing in the 1830s. Today, its residents include pipistrelle bats, brown long-eared bats and barn owls. 🦉
