Local Fact of the Day: Perth’s castle that was born a ruin 🏰
Kinnoull Tower looks medieval, but it was deliberately built as a romantic ruin after a visit to Germany’s Rhine castles.

Restore • Revive • Renew
High above the River Tay, Kinnoull Tower looks like the remains of an ancient castle—but it was designed that way from the beginning.
Historic Environment Scotland records it as an 18th-century artificial ruin, built by the 9th Earl of Kinnoull and Lord Gray after a visit to the Rhine. Perth had gained its own dramatic cliff-top “castle”, created for the view rather than for defence. 🏰
