Scotlandwell takes its name from Fons Scotiaeââthe Well of Scotlandâ. Medieval pilgrims travelling towards St Andrews stopped at the spring, while the Red Friars maintained a hospital nearby.
The elegant wellhouse is much younger. Local landowner Thomas Bruce of Arnot commissioned a village improvement scheme, and architect David Bryce designed the ornamental well completed in 1858. The spring is ancient; its familiar face is Victorian.
