Local Fact of the Day: when Loch Leven’s shoreline moved 🌊
The familiar view around Kinross was reshaped by an ambitious nineteenth-century engineering scheme.

Restore • Revive • Renew
Loch Leven’s shoreline has not always been where we see it today. 🌊
NatureScot records a major change between 1830 and 1832: land and mill owners wanted more farmland and better control of water flowing to mills downstream. A deeper, straighter River Leven channel at Findatie and sluice gates helped reshape the loch.
As the water retreated, three new islands were revealed. A familiar landscape with a surprisingly man-made chapter in its story.
