Local Fact of the Day: the mill powered by the Tay for 200 years ⚙️
Built at a powerful bend of the River Tay in 1786, Stanley Mills helped turn water into two centuries of textile production.

Restore • Revive • Renew
Stanley Mills was built in 1786 at a hairpin bend of the River Tay, where the rushing water could power its machinery. ⚙️
Historic Environment Scotland says local merchants established the cotton mill with support from Industrial Revolution pioneer Richard Arkwright. Waterwheels—and later water-powered turbines—helped the complex produce textiles for about 200 years before it finally closed in 1989.
A remarkable piece of Perthshire’s working history, still standing beside the river.
