Ravenscraig Castle above Kirkcaldy’s shore began as a royal home—but gunpowder helped turn it into something far tougher. 🏰 Construction started in 1460 for Queen Mary of Gueldres. The unfinished castle later passed to the Sinclair family, who developed its formidable defences: a rock-cut ditch, gun holes, a gun platform and a frontal wall about 3.5 metres thick. Historic Environment Scotland says Ravenscraig is believed to be the first Scottish castle systematically planned for firearm defence—a dramatic meeting of royal comfort and new military technology.
