Local Fact of the Day: the cathedral that took 250 years to build ⛪
Dunkeld’s sacred story reaches back to St Columba’s relics—and its cathedral took about 250 years to complete.

Dunkeld Cathedral grew from one of Scotland’s oldest religious centres—but the stone building we see today was centuries in the making. ⛪
In 849, Kenneth MacAlpin brought relics of St Columba to a specially built church at Dunkeld after Viking raids made Iona unsafe. The present cathedral came much later: Historic Environment Scotland says its construction stretched for about 250 years, from the mid-1200s to the late 1400s.
Its roofed medieval choir still serves as a parish church, while the nave stands as a dramatic ruin beside the River Tay.
