Breeding in Milnathort
Cygnet Potato Breeders, also known as Cygnet PB, is part of the Alexander Harley Seeds group. Its work combines breeding, propagation, seed production and sales. Breeding is carried out at the Milnathort base, where selected parent plants are crossed and promising material is progressively grown and assessed. Selection considers features such as crop yield, shape, storage, cooking characteristics and resistance to disease. Trials also take place at other UK and overseas sites.

Seed production and industry enquiries
Cygnet PB works with contract growers alongside its own Perthshire growing operations. Its varieties reach commercial markets through sales arrangements, licensed production and its relationship with Cygnet PEP. The website contains variety profiles and agronomy material for growers considering particular crops. The public contact address is Blairfield Farm, Milnathort, with phone and email routes for breeding, variety-development and sales enquiries. This is an agricultural industry business rather than a general garden shop; enquiries about seed quantities, variety availability or a visit should be arranged directly.
Cygnet PB’s work connects variety development, seed production and commercial growing. Growers can use its variety profiles as a starting point before discussing suitability, quantities and supply arrangements with the team. This is an agricultural industry business, so direct enquiries to the relevant breeding or sales contact rather than treating the farm as a general garden shop.

A closer look
From local breeding to international growers
Cygnet’s work follows potatoes from breeding and micropropagation through to seed production. Its Cygnet PEP partnership, established in 2012, provides an international route for those varieties, linking the local business with growers in other markets.
