Our Local Heroes · Richard Scott

A generous neighbour, an unsung hero — and a world record holder

Behind these local businesses is a man Steve and Arlene are proud to recognise. Richard’s generosity reaches well beyond the shop door: giving his time, bringing people together and quietly helping his community.

Making Christmas Day a day of company and kindness

Steve describes Richard as someone who gives up his own Christmas Day so people can enjoy a properly cooked meal and good company. Local reporting records Richard organising the community Christmas lunch and serving as head chef, with volunteers, Kinross Parish Church and support from Hunters of Kinross.

The February 2020 Kinross Newsletter described a three-course festive meal for people who might otherwise have spent Christmas alone. During the restrictions later in 2020, the community’s plans changed to delivering hot Christmas lunches to people at home. It is practical kindness: a meal, a welcome and the feeling that somebody cares.

Supporting the local Poppy Appeal

Richard has also used his High Street shop to support remembrance. The Perth & Kinross Lieutenancy documented a visit by Deputy Lieutenant Andy Middlemiss to see the laundry’s poppy-themed window display. The photograph below captures that community support.

36 hours and 32 minutes on a swing

Yes, really. Guinness World Records officially records Richard’s longest marathon on a swing: 36 hours and 32 minutes, achieved in Kinross on 14–15 May 2022. A childhood ambition became a remarkable local achievement.

Caledonia Play provided the swing, and Kinross & District Rotary Club supported the challenge at Loch Leven’s Larder. The effort also supported Rotary’s Covid-19 vaccination and prevention fundraising.

Putting that determination behind Rachel House

Richard’s later fundraising campaign with Kinross & District Rotary Club and CHAS set out a new 50-hour swing challenge in support of a sensory room at Rachel House children’s hospice. The campaign shows how he turns an extraordinary personal challenge into support for local children and families.

“Richard is one of the most generous people in our community. He gets on with helping people without looking for recognition or thanks. A proper unsung local hero.”

Steve Cooke · Gutters2glory

Richard, thank you — from Steve and Arlene. The laundry, the cleaning business, the Christmas meals and the fundraising all tell the same story: someone who cares about the place he calls home.

A familiar face on Kinross High Street

The premises also feature Celebrations at Loch Leven Laundry, listed by Perth City & Towns for cards, balloons, candles, chocolates and gifts. Ask in the shop about the current selection.
