About Lochleven Castle

The tower house dates from the fourteenth century. Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned here in 1567 and escaped the following year. Visitors can explore the surviving castle ranges and island during the operating season. The crossing is part of the visit, with timed boat tickets booked through Historic Scotland.

Planning a visit

The service is seasonal and weather-dependent; consult the operator’s live notice before travelling. Advance booking is recommended because boat capacity is limited. Access requires stepping into and out of the boat, and the passenger boat cannot carry visitors in wheelchairs. The mainland visitor facilities are at Pier Road. Check the detailed access guide and arrival instructions when booking, especially for anyone with mobility needs.

A closer look

An island that changed shape

Lochleven Castle’s island was once much smaller. Historic Environment Scotland explains that partial drainage of the loch in 1836 exposed more land around it. The medieval tower also has an unusual defensive feature: its original entrance sits five metres above the ground.
