A castle built in chapters
Stirling Castle is a group of buildings shaped by successive royal ambitions. The castle’s official history dates the King’s Old Building to James IV in 1496, the Great Hall to around 1503 and James V’s Royal Palace to around 1540.
Spot the Great Hall
The pale Great Hall stands out in Steve’s two views. Its scale and colour help pick out one of the castle’s most distinctive buildings, while the surrounding walls show how the royal spaces fit within a defended hilltop site.
The Chapel Royal was commissioned by James VI in 1594. Later army buildings and outer defences added further layers to the place.
Two views, one striking setting
The closer photograph brings the buildings together; the wider one lets the countryside and hills join the story. Explore the official castle website for the history behind the rooms, halls and courtyards.
