Local Fact of the Day: the windmill that made salt, not flour 🧂

St Monans’ coastal windmill powered seawater pumps for one of Fife’s most remarkable industries.

Gutters2glory LtdLocal Fact of the Day
St Monans windmill and the remains of its historic saltpans on the Fife coast, photographed by Richard Sutcliffe

Restore • Revive • Renew

St Monans’ windmill was not built to grind flour. At the St Philips saltworks, opened in 1772, its sails powered machinery that pumped seawater uphill to nine panhouses. Coal fires then heated the great pans until the water evaporated and salt remained. The works survived into the 1820s, and the restored tower is now Fife’s last remaining windmill—a striking reminder of the East Neuk’s industrial coast. Have you visited? Local Fact of the Day: the healing well beneath a Victorian canopy 💧

Scotlandwell’s famous spring welcomed medieval pilgrims—but the handsome wellhouse seen today arrived much later.

Scotlandwell takes its name from Fons Scotiae—“the Well of Scotland”. Medieval pilgrims travelling towards St Andrews stopped at the spring, while the Red Friars maintained a hospital nearby. The elegant wellhouse is much younger. Local landowner Thomas Bruce of Arnot commissioned a village improvement scheme, and architect David Bryce designed the ornamental well completed in 1858.
