From Steve & Arlene

Good food. Good friendship. Proper dry humour.

Neil, you’ve become a good friend to us over the years. We’ve looked after the gutters at the Balgedie Toll Tavern for years, carried out pressure washing and helped keep the property maintained. Getting to know you along the way has been a real pleasure.

And then there’s the food. For us, it has been outrageously brilliant — a consistently high standard that very few restaurants in this area can match. It has been a delight to sit down and eat at your restaurant.

Arlene and I both love your dry sense of humour. You’ve given us plenty to smile about, as well as plenty of reasons to come back for another meal.

Neil, enjoy your next adventure, mate. Thank you for the food, the friendship and the laughs.

A stopping place with a story

The Balgedie Toll Tavern stands in Wester Balgedie, in rural Kinross-shire. The tavern’s own history names Neil Cairney and family as its custodians since September 2019. It describes a tavern at a road toll, where travellers would pause and pay before continuing their journey. The former toll house survives at the southern end of the building.

What they get up to

  • Country dining: the kitchen’s published approach centres on local, seasonal ingredients. Its food page describes meat from Quality Meat Scotland assured farms, seafood supplied by Campbells, seasonal game and homemade desserts. Garden and allotment produce also makes seasonal appearances.
  • Local flavours: the drinks page features real ales from Loch Leven Brewery, locally distilled gin and coffee from Kinross’s Unorthodox Roasters, alongside wines and malt whiskies.
  • A place to settle in: main-bar and snug dining spaces, traditional beams and stonework, plus outside tables for brighter days.

Before you visit

The dog-friendly area is small, and the tavern asks visitors to book ahead for a suitable table.

For the published December plans and voucher information, see the visit update above. Please confirm the date and current arrangements with the tavern when booking.
