About Burleigh Castle

Historic Environment Scotland dates the surviving stone castle mainly to the late fifteenth or early sixteenth century, with later alterations. The Balfour family’s connection with the site ended after the Jacobite rising of 1715. The surviving towers and connecting wall make the site a compact stop for people interested in local architecture and history.

A closer look

Royal visits and a Jacobite turning point

Burleigh was a Balfour family stronghold and a stopping place for James VI, who visited between 1587 and 1596. Its fortunes changed after the 1715 Jacobite rising: the family lost the estate the following year. Historic Environment Scotland tells the fuller story.
